Buying a toy for a child you only see a few times a year is harder than it looks. Is a four-year-old too old for a push-along toy? Is a building set with 1,000 pieces too much for a seven-year-old? The simplest way to avoid a gift that sits in the cupboard is to start with age, and that is exactly how Toys”R”Us Portugal organises its catalogue.
The store lets you filter toys by age, from newborns up to 12-14 years and older children. We went through the 1-2, 3-4, 5-7 and 8-11 age bands on the Toys”R”Us Portugal online store on 2 November 2026 and picked a few ideas from each. Prices are the ones shown that day and will change as the Christmas season goes on.
In this guide
Ages 1-2: First Wheels and Interactive Toys
At this age, toys that grow with the child and toys that respond to touch and sound tend to get the most use. Two picks from the 1-2 years filter:
- Chicco 4-in-1 Tricycle (129.99 euros): a tricycle with a canopy and a parent push handle, designed to change as the child grows. A bigger gift that might suit grandparents or a shared present.
- VTech Baby Interactive Television (39.99 euros): a toy TV with a remote and buttons, a good choice if you want something mid-priced and engaging.
- Panda Story Teller (19.99 euros): a storytelling soft toy from the same age list, for a smaller budget.
Tip: for this age group, check the recommended age on the product page itself. Some items in the filter are marked for 18 months and up.
Ages 3-4: Imaginative Play and Big Builds
Preschoolers love role play, dolls and anything they can build and rebuild. Several items in this filter carried discounts when we checked:
- LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box 10698 (36.49 euros, shown as 27% off): an open-ended box of bricks that works from age four and keeps being useful for years.
- Barbie Dream Land Dreamhouse (231.68 euros, shown as 22% off): the big-ticket gift in this age band.
- Sad Baby surprise box by ZURU (17.99 euros, marked as new): a small surprise toy for stocking fillers or a classmate’s present.
Toys”R”Us also lists its own brands here, such as Funny Home play kitchens and Sun & Sport bikes, which are often a cheaper alternative to the big names.
Ages 5-7: Digital Pets, Trains and Racing
Children in early primary school start to want the toys their friends talk about, but they still enjoy hands-on play. From the 5-7 years filter:
- Tamagotchi Paradise (49.99 euros, several models): the latest take on the classic digital pet, which suits kids who like looking after something.
- LEGO City Classic Steam Train 60511 (81.31 euros, shown as 9% off): a train set that combines building with play afterwards.
- Hot Wheels Racing F1 downhill circuit: one of several race tracks in this age band, for children who like speed.
Ages 8-11: Science and Detailed Builds
Older children often want gifts that feel grown-up. The 8-11 list is full of LEGO sets, but there are good options outside building too:
- Micro Planet Super HD Telescope (79.99 euros): a telescope from one of the store’s own ranges, a strong pick for curious kids.
- LEGO Creator 3 in 1 Classic Pirate Ship 31387 (87.41 euros, shown as 12% off): one box, three different models.
- LEGO Technic Ducati Desmo450 MX Factory 42238 (49.80 euros): a motocross bike model with moving parts for young engineers.
Other names in this filter include Beyblade X battle sets, Pokemon toys and LEGO sets from Star Wars, Harry Potter and One Piece, so it is easy to match a gift to a child’s favourite franchise.
Setting a Budget Before You Browse
The age filters mix small and very large gifts, so it helps to decide on a budget first. In the lists we checked, small surprise toys and soft toys sat around 18 to 20 euros, mid-range picks such as interactive toys, digital pets and smaller LEGO sets were between about 35 and 50 euros, and bigger presents such as tricycles, train sets, telescopes and dollhouses ran from roughly 80 euros to over 200 euros. If several relatives are buying for the same child, agreeing on one larger shared gift can be better value than several small ones. It is also worth looking at the store’s own brands, which usually cost less than licensed toys of a similar type.
