Winter in Spain is not one thing. In Madrid, Burgos or the Pyrenees, cold, dry mornings call for real insulation. On the northern coast, from Galicia to the Basque Country, the bigger problem is often rain and wind. Choosing between a down jacket and a waterproof shell depends on where you live and how you spend your days outside.
Barcelona-based retailer FOOTDISTRICT is best known for sneakers, but its outerwear section is large, with brands such as Nike ACG, The North Face, Patagonia, Jordan and Filling Pieces. This guide compares a selection of down jackets and rain jackets, including several with reduced prices. All details and prices come from footdistrict.com and were checked on 4 November 2026. Prices are in euros, and discounts and sizes can change quickly.

Down or Shell: The Basic Difference
A down or insulated jacket traps warm air and is designed to keep you warm in cold, mostly dry conditions. Many have a water-repellent finish, which helps in light showers, but that is not the same as being waterproof. A rain shell, by contrast, has little or no insulation and is built to keep rain and wind out. Shells are usually lighter and work well over a sweater or fleece, which gives you flexible layering.
As a rough guide, if your winter is cold and dry, start with down. If it is mild and wet, start with a waterproof shell. If you get both, a shell over a light insulating layer is the most versatile combination.
Reduced Down Jackets
The standout reduction at the time of checking was the Nike ACG “Lunar Lake” PrimaLoft jacket, listed at 158 EUR, down from 350 EUR, in a bright orange colour. FOOTDISTRICT’s description says it uses Nike Therma-FIT ADV technology with thermal-regulating fabric, is water-repellent, and can be folded into its own small bag, which makes it useful for travel. It is made of nylon and polyester with a regular fit. Other colour versions were listed at different prices.
For women, the Jordan Women’s Down Jacket was the biggest discount we found, at 90 EUR instead of 300 EUR, in brown. The product page lists polyester and nylon materials. Only some sizes were showing at the time of checking, so availability may be limited.

The Filling Pieces Men’s Puffer Jacket was listed at 113 EUR, reduced from 375 EUR. It is a black down jacket, which the retailer describes as elegant and contemporary, and it is easy to wear with everyday outfits. The North Face Layering down jacket for women was reduced to 358 EUR from 650 EUR.

A Full-Price Classic: The Retro Nuptse
The North Face 1996 Retro Nuptse needs little introduction. FOOTDISTRICT lists it at 350 EUR. According to the product page, it is made from shiny ripstop fabric with a PFC-free DWR water-repellent finish and 700 fill power ProDown insulation, and it has a stowable, adjustable hood and elastic cuffs. It is the warmest-looking option here and a good choice for genuinely cold weather.

Rain Shells for Wet Winters
The Patagonia Torrentshell 3L costs 200 EUR. The product page describes a three-layer, waterproof and breathable H2No outer, made from recycled nylon, with a regular fit. Three-layer construction usually feels more durable than lighter two-layer shells, making it a good choice for walking and commuting in heavy rain.

The Nike ACG “Phantazma” Storm-FIT ADV jacket costs 160 EUR. FOOTDISTRICT says its Storm-FIT ADV fabric is waterproof and windproof in bad weather. It has a relaxed fit, a two-way zip and packs into its own pocket. The looser cut leaves room for a fleece or light down layer underneath.

When a Combination Makes Sense
Many people do not need to choose only one jacket. A packable insulated jacket such as the Lunar Lake can be worn on its own on cold, clear days and under a roomy shell such as the Phantazma when it rains. Together, those two pieces cost 318 EUR at the prices we checked, which is less than some single premium down jackets. If you mainly commute in a city with mild but wet winters, one good shell over your usual knitwear may be enough. If you spend weekends in the mountains, a warmer down jacket is the better first purchase.
How to Choose the Right Size and Fit
- Check whether the cut is regular, relaxed or oversize; it is stated on each product page.
- If you plan to layer a down jacket under a shell, size the shell to fit over it.
- Look at which sizes are still available on reduced items, as discounted stock often runs low.
- Read the material details: water-repellent is not the same as waterproof.
- Check FOOTDISTRICT’s returns policy before ordering if you are between sizes.
Our Verdict
For cold, dry winters, the reduced Nike ACG Lunar Lake is the best value in this selection, and the Jordan Women’s Down Jacket is a strong buy if your size is available. If you want a long-term classic, the Retro Nuptse is still the reference point. For wet regions, the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L is the most robust shell here, and the Nike ACG Phantazma is a lighter, packable alternative. Prices and stock change often, so check footdistrict.com for the latest offers before you buy.
