In Poland, the main Christmas celebration happens on the evening of 24 December. Wigilia, the Christmas Eve supper, traditionally begins when the first star appears and is meat-free, built around fish, mushrooms, fermented cabbage and beetroot. Many families aim for twelve dishes. Getting good ingredients matters, and shops get very busy in the week before Christmas.
Online farmers’ market Lokalny Rolnik connects shoppers with Polish farms and small producers and delivers to the door. This guide turns its current range into a practical Wigilia shopping list. Products and prices come from lokalnyrolnik.pl and were checked on 4 November 2026; the range and prices may change closer to Christmas, so check availability for your delivery date.

Carp: The Star of the Table
Carp is the fish most associated with Wigilia. Lokalny Rolnik lists organic carp from Ryby z Serca Natury in several cuts. The dzwonko, or carp steak, is cut across the backbone, which gives it its round shape and name. The producer says it is especially good for frying and that it usually serves it fried in clarified butter.

For a baked dish, the carp fillet is described as a middle form between a whole side and a scored fillet, without rib bones and not densely scored. The producer recommends it for baking. The site also lists a scored fillet and a whole side of carp for those who prefer them.

Herring: Essential Starters
No Wigilia is complete without herring. The Stara Wedzarnia matjas-style fillets are skinless and lightly salted, and the producer describes them as coming from the North-East Atlantic and suited to salads, starters and traditional festive dishes. Lightly salted fillets are convenient because they need little or no soaking before you marinate them in oil with onion, or dress them in cream with apple.
Keep herring chilled: the product page gives a storage temperature of 0 to 7 degrees C. It is a good item to order a few days before Christmas Eve rather than at the very last minute.
Sauerkraut for Cabbage and Pierogi
Sauerkraut appears on the Wigilia table in several forms: braised with dried wild mushrooms, mixed with peas, or as a filling for pierogi and the small uszka dumplings. The organic sauerkraut from Gospodarstwo Ekologiczne Jany is marked as a bestseller and sold in a 1 litre jar. It should be kept refrigerated. Lokalny Rolnik also has a dedicated sauerkraut category and a version with carrot.

Barszcz: Two Ways to Make It
Clear red barszcz, often served with uszka, is the classic Wigilia soup. Its sour flavour traditionally comes from zakwas, fermented beetroot sour. Lokalny Rolnik sells a 500 ml zakwas from M. Turkowski, made from beetroot fermented in barrels with garlic, horseradish and dill and Klodawa rock salt. The product is unpasteurised and should be kept in the fridge.

If you are short of time, the Kowalewski organic barszcz concentrate is a shortcut. The producer says it is made from organic beetroot by natural lactic fermentation, is gluten-free and contains no preservatives or vinegar. Dilute it with hot vegetable or mushroom stock and season to taste.

Mushroom dishes are another Wigilia staple, from mushroom soup to the filling for uszka. Dried wild mushrooms are often bought well before Christmas, so if you cannot find them in the current range, look again in December or use a local market for that one ingredient while ordering the rest online.
Something Sweet
Kutia, the wheat, poppy seed and honey dessert from eastern Poland, and gingerbread both need honey. Lokalny Rolnik stocks a large range from Polish apiaries. The multiflower honey from Gospodarstwo Pasieczne Lyson is described as mild and sweet and good for baking, with honey mainly from the Beskid Maly region according to the product page.
