The Riveting True Story Behind HBO Max’s Love & Death

The year 1980 marked an unforgettable time for the small Methodist community of Lucas, Texas. In the same June that saw the release of ‘Rocky III’, an event shook this peaceful town to its core – a grisly murder that left many questioning justice and coming face-to-face with their own morality. This is the true story behind HBO Max’s drama ‘Love & Death’.

The Tragic Affair That Started it All

It all began in 1978 when Candace “Candy” Montgomery had an extramarital affair with family friend Allan Gore. Seeking more passion in her life, Candy sought solace in her relationship with Allen, and they met regularly over nearly a year without any public knowledge. Little did anyone know how much devastation this clandestine affair would cause in the future.

Betty Gore’s Brutal Murder

On June 13th, 1980, Allan found his wife Betty Gore dead at home after leaving for a business trip earlier that day – she had been brutally murdered with an axe from their garage. Candy was babysitting their daughter Alisa at the Montgomery residence during this time and soon became a primary suspect as police investigations revealed her past relationship with Allan Gore to be true.

Candy’s Self-Defence Claim on Trial

Two weeks later, Candy was arrested and maintained throughout her trial that she acted in self-defense when she killed Betty due to fear of being exposed as having had an affair with Allan before he married Betty, as well as verbal threats made by Betty regarding putting Alisa up for adoption out of revenge against Candy and Allen’s relationship.

The trial made headlines across America – will Leesa Montgomery be held guilty, or will she be acquitted? On August 11th, 1980, after long deliberations by jurors from both sides of the aisle, within just two hours of closing arguments being presented, Candy Montgomery was ultimately acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she had committed murder. The acquittal of Candy Montgomery made her one of the most infamous cases in American criminal history.
