Changing energy supplier in Italy can sound like a lot of paperwork, but for most households it is now a short online process. Enel Energia, one of the best-known names on the Italian free market, offers several plans that can only be activated on the web, and the whole switch can be done from a laptop or smartphone in a few minutes.
This guide is not a price comparison. Instead, it walks you through the practical side: what documents you need, what happens to your meter, how long the change takes, what the current web-only offers include and how to earn extra value once you become a customer. Step 1: Check What You Need Before You Start
According to Enel, to request an online offer such as Enel Digital Luce you only need two things: a recent energy bill and your codice fiscale (Italian tax code). The bill contains the technical details of your supply, such as your POD code for electricity or PDR code for gas, so keep it at hand while you fill in the form.
The web-only offers also have two fixed requirements. You must accept Bolletta Web, which means your bills arrive by email in digital format, and you must pay by direct debit from your bank account. Billing is monthly, so you can follow your costs month by month.
Step 2: Understand What Happens to Your Meter
A common worry is that switching means a technician visit or a new installation. Enel states that there are no activation costs for its online electricity offer and that no work is needed on your system or on your meter. The electricity keeps flowing through the same network and the same meter, and only the company that bills you changes.
There is one technical detail to check. Enel Digital Luce is reserved for domestic customers with a second generation smart meter, known as a contatore 2G, that is read remotely and can record consumption in fifteen-minute intervals. Step 3: Choose the Right Web-Only Offer
At the time of writing, Enel Energia highlights two online offers for households that are switching from another supplier.
Enel Digital Luce is an electricity-only plan for homes with a 2G meter. Enel lists a price of 0.108 euros per kWh for the first 175 kWh each month and 0.175 euros per kWh for consumption above that threshold, with the energy price fixed for the first 36 months. The fixed charge is 12 euros per month per supply, equal to 144 euros per year. Prices exclude VAT and taxes, and network losses are included as defined by ARERA, the Italian energy regulator. Enel says these conditions are valid until 29 October 2026, unless the offer closes earlier.
Enel Fix Web Luce e Gas is designed for people who want one supplier for both electricity and gas. The electricity and gas prices are fixed for three years, and billing is monthly. Enel advertises a saving of up to 20 percent, calculated from the list price of its Enel Luce e Giga and Enel Gas e Giga offers: 14 percent off for signing up online, plus a further 6 percent for being an Enel customer for both services. With both supplies, Enel lists an electricity price of 0.169 euros per kWh and a fixed charge of 12 euros per month for each supply. Enel states that these conditions are valid until 22 October 2026, unless the offer closes earlier.

Step 4: Sign Up and Wait for the Switch
Once you submit the online form, Enel handles the change with your previous supplier. You do not need to cancel your old contract yourself. Enel explains that the switch takes place at the latest by the first day of the third month after the contract is concluded. Until then, your current supplier continues to bill you as normal, so there is no gap in your supply.
You also keep the right to change your mind. Enel says you can cancel the activation request free of charge within fourteen days of concluding the contract, by registered letter. Later on, you can leave Enel Energia at any time by signing a contract with a new supplier, which handles the termination for you.
Step 5: Join ENELtiPREMIA and Collect Points
After activation, it is worth signing up to ENELtiPREMIA, Enel Energia’s free loyalty programme. Customers collect points through their supplies, can earn extra points by completing missions, and then choose rewards from a catalogue according to their points balance.
The programme is organised into levels. Enel explains that customers with a single Enel supply start at the Essential level, while customers with more supplies can reach higher levels with additional benefits. Members also gain access to prize competitions that Enel runs throughout the year, both online and in Enel stores.
Step 6: Use Enel Happy Hours to Get More From Your Supply
Another initiative linked to ENELtiPREMIA is Enel Happy Hours. Domestic customers with an active electricity supply, a 2G meter and an ENELtiPREMIA membership are invited to move some of their consumption into suggested time slots, and they receive a benefit on their bill in return. Enel communicates the hours from time to time, and according to the Enel website the initiative is valid until 31 October 2026. Some offers, such as regulated or PLACET supplies, are excluded under the terms and conditions.
In practice, this can be as simple as running the washing machine or the dishwasher during the suggested hours. It is a small habit change that can make a difference over a full year.
