The Hunger Games: On Stage Day Out: Songbird Restaurant, Canary Wharf and Pre-Show Tips

The bar and dining room at Songbird Restaurant and Bar inside Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre

Seeing The Hunger Games: On Stage is an event in itself, but the show is only part of the experience. The production plays at Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre, a purpose-built venue in one of London’s most vibrant riverside districts, with its own restaurant, three bars and plenty to see and do nearby. With a little planning, a trip to Panem becomes a full day or evening out.

This guide focuses on everything around the performance: where to eat, what to do before and after, how to get there and how to plan the timings so you can relax and enjoy the show.

Songbird Restaurant and Bar

The theatre is home to its own destination restaurant overlooking the docks. Songbird Restaurant and Bar describes its menu as a medley of seasonal dishes inspired by the British Isles, with crafted drinks to match. It is designed as the perfect spot for pre-theatre dining, whether you want a relaxed dinner, light bites or a celebratory drink before the curtain rises.

Songbird sits at 2 Cartier Circle, Canary Wharf, with an alternative entrance through Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre itself. According to its website, it is open from Tuesday to Saturday in the evenings, with lunchtime openings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and it is closed on Mondays. Opening times can change, so check the Songbird website before you go and book a table in advance, especially for weekend performances.

If you have booked a meal at Songbird before the show, the theatre recommends arriving around two and a half hours before the start time so you can enjoy your food without rushing.

The VIP Experience

For birthdays, anniversaries or a special treat, the VIP package combines a premium ticket with hospitality at Songbird. It includes exclusive access to the restaurant’s VIP area, three glasses of Taittinger Champagne, five chef’s canapes, a complimentary programme and cloakroom service, and a theatre host to escort you to and from your seats.

During the interval, VIP guests return to Songbird for the signature Songbird Sundae Experience, made with award-winning Hackney Gelato. You create your own sundae from house-made sauces and toppings, served in the restaurant’s birdcage stand. It is a memorable way to turn a theatre trip into a proper celebration.

More Places to Eat and Drink Nearby

Canary Wharf is often described as a city within a city, with more than 300 shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. The official show website highlights several pre-theatre favourites, including Dishoom for Indian small plates, Nora for the flavours of Istanbul with fresh breads, mezze and charcoal-grilled meats, Feels Like June for California-inspired dining and Roe for modern British menus. After the show, Crate Bar is suggested for drinks and casual bites.

Inside the theatre there are three bars, so you can also grab a drink before the performance or during the interval without leaving the building.

Things to Do in Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf is much more than London’s financial district. Before or after the show, you can walk along the docks, relax in Jubilee Park or explore the Crossrail Place Roof Garden. Art lovers can follow one of the UK’s largest free outdoor art collections, and families can enjoy the playgrounds and weekend events in Jubilee Park.

Seasonal events add even more reasons to visit. The Winter Lights festival brightens the area in the colder months, while summer brings outdoor concerts and interactive water features. If you are visiting in December, combining the show with Christmas shopping and the festive atmosphere makes for a memorable day.

Getting There

The theatre is on Water Street, Canary Wharf, London E14 5GX, about a five-minute walk from Canary Wharf station, which is served by the Jubilee line, the Elizabeth line and the DLR. According to the official travel guide, the Jubilee line reaches London Bridge in around 7 minutes and Waterloo in around 11 minutes, while the Elizabeth line reaches Liverpool Street in around 6 minutes and Paddington in around 17 minutes. The venue can also be reached by boat.

If you are driving, Canary Wharf has four underground public car parks. The closest to the theatre are Canada Square Car Park, with its entrance on Montgomery Street, and Jubilee Place Car Park, with its entrance on Bank Street. All have a height restriction of 2 metres, and there are designated bays for blue badge holders and parents with children.

Accessible Visits

Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre offers step-free and wheelchair access for both transferring and non-transferring guests, and a drop-off point is located near the venue, although there is no on-site accessible parking. Closed captions are available at every performance through smart glasses or tablets that can be reserved in advance, and trained assistance dogs are welcome. Access bookings require a Nimbus registration number, so register before you book.

Where to Stay

If you are travelling from outside London, an overnight stay lets you enjoy dinner, the show and a relaxed morning by the water. The show’s website recommends Vertus Edit, an aparthotel in Wood Wharf, and TRIBE London Canary Wharf, both close to the theatre. Staying nearby also means no rush for the last train after an evening performance.

Timing Your Visit

Evening performances run from Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with matinees on Friday and Saturday at 2.30pm and on Sunday afternoons, starting at 3pm from 1 November. The show lasts around two hours and thirty minutes including an interval. Allow extra time on arrival if you want to use the cloakroom, which is available for a small charge.

A good plan for an evening performance is an early dinner at Songbird or nearby, a short walk along the docks and taking your seat in plenty of time. Remember that the theatre has a no-readmission policy during the performance.

Plan Your Trip to Panem

With a destination restaurant under the same roof, riverside walks, free public art and excellent transport links, The Hunger Games: On Stage is easy to turn into a complete day out. Whether you are celebrating with the VIP experience or simply enjoying dinner and the show, a little planning makes the whole visit more relaxed.

Popular dates sell quickly, especially at weekends and over Christmas. Book your Hunger Games: On Stage tickets and start planning your day in Canary Wharf.
